According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Kenya has an annual demand of approximately 500,000 units of blood. However, in the FY 2022/2023 ending June the country collected 412,531 units annually, leaving a substantial gap in the supply of safe and adequate blood. The shortage of blood in Kenya is a result of several factors, including inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and poor blood donor recruitment and retention.

Our Four Pillars of Approach

A key objective of this assignment is to ensure the sustainability of regular blood donors; Key strategic partners represent significant population segments that have large pools of potential donors.

Our mobilization approach is anchored on four main pillars:

1. Targeted Education

The goal of using targeted education is to emphasize the role of every person in voluntarily non-remunerated blood donation, and the necessity of donating blood on a regular basis. Apart from acquiring long term partnerships from the leading institutions, all members of the institutions must be encouraged to donate blood through appealing to their altruism while countering negative stereotypes or misconceptions associated with blood donation. Targeted education is providing us an avenue to address the psychosocial correlates of blood donation motivation depending on the potential donor group in question, e.g. patriotism, empathy, altruism or reciprocity.

2. Advocacy

We liaise with the KBTTS communication team to align marketing communication to potential blood donors. Targeted advocacy ensures that the right messaging is aligned to audience to complement the conversations we hold with key stakeholder groups while leveraging the power of repetition in expressing the need for blood donation, where to donate blood and the instilling positive reinforcement.

3. Mobilizing donors on the day of blood donation

We have been coordinating with a network of healthcare providers countrywide to mobilize blood donors on ground on the day of donation. Our aim is to foster the spirit of blood donation while promoting health seeking behavior amongst blood donors.

4. Long-term Partnership Model

We target the community based on their passion points and leverage behavioral change communication to educate, spark interest and drive action towards blood donation. We meet them at their point of comfort and passion and rally them to be part of the solution.
